RETRO AWARD

Pioneering plans for a Quantum-led ‘eco-refurbishment' of two Victorian terraced houses in Leicester have won a Government-backed award.

Quantum member EMH has won the contract to devise an innovative scheme to enable the ageing and inefficient buildings to meet UK government target reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.

EMH is working with De Montfort University, Vanguard Homes and Newcastle City Council to improve the properties' thermal performance through vastly improved insulation and controlled ventilation, delivering an 80% carbon reduction.

One of the houses will be occupied while the improvement work is carried out and the other vacant, as the team devise practical solutions which are replicable elsewhere.

Work, which will begin in July, will take a maximum of five weeks, and will be followed up with a comprehensive two year monitoring strategy administered by the Energy Saving Trust.

The feasibility project is being funded by the £3.5 million Retrofit for the Future competition, run by the government-backed Technology Strategy Board. Just 87 projects have been selected nationally.
